Stokely Carmichael, later known as Kwame Ture, was a prominent figure in the American civil rights movement and an influential advocate for black power. Born on June 29, 1941, in Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago, he moved to the United States at age 11. Carmichael's activism began during his time at Howard University, where he became involved in the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC). He quickly rose to prominence within the organization, participating in Freedom Rides and registering African American voters in the South. In 1966, Carmichael became SNCC's chairman and began to push the organization towards a more radical stance, coining the term "black power" to emphasize racial pride, economic empowerment, and the creation of political and social institutions for black people.

Under Carmichael's leadership, the concept of black power gained national attention and sparked a new phase in the civil rights movement. Moving away from the nonviolent integrationist approach championed by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Carmichael argued for self-defense and black autonomy. His call for black power resonated with many African Americans who were frustrated with the slow pace of progress and ongoing racial oppression. Carmichael's advocacy extended beyond the United States, as he sought to build alliances with liberation movements in Africa and the Caribbean. His travels and connections with leaders like Kwame Nkrumah of Ghana and Sekou Toure of Guinea influenced his global perspective on the struggle for black liberation.

Carmichael's impact on the civil rights movement and the broader black liberation struggle was profound and lasting. His shift towards a more militant stance helped to inspire the formation of groups like the Black Panther Party and influenced the rhetoric and strategies of activists worldwide. Carmichael continued his activism after moving to Guinea in 1969, where he adopted the name Kwame Ture and worked towards pan-African unity until his death on November 15, 1998. His legacy is remembered for challenging the status quo and advocating for a vision of black empowerment and self-determination that continues to inspire movements for racial justice and equality today.
